We at Spanish Express provide a tailor-made program of 1-4 weeks. Here, study-abroad students of every age and background can select their preferred Spanish-speaking region for study tours. It’s an invaluable chance for linguistic skills enhancement and cultural immersion.
One factor to weigh is the level of official language expertise needed for students to get the most out of the Spanish study abroad programs.
Understanding each student’s individual interests and Spanish learning needs is crucial for customizing the program to their unique tastes. This includes scheduling activities and excursions that align with their interests and pinpointing areas where additional language learning support may be beneficial.
Logistically speaking, meticulous planning is key for a seamless experience. This involves coordinating travel, accommodation, and Spanish courses. Clear communication with the study abroad students and the accompanying educators is essential.
All in all, a program of this nature has the potential to deliver a one-of-a-kind language learning and cultural immersion experience and would be a noteworthy addition to any organization’s array of offerings.
Joe has visited several destinations with our Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP): Valencia and Teruel.
Valencia was its long-stay location among Spanish-speaking regions. Teruel was special for Joe because of an old movie, “Lovers of Teruel,” he watched.
Joe felt a strong cultural immersion seeing the Mausoleum of the Lovers of Teruel. This spot brought back memories and resonated with his love for learning Spanish abroad.
In Teruel, Joe’s Spanish skills got a boost. He admired Mozarabic buildings that showed off a rich cultural heritage. He also visited the ancient Mudejar Cathedral and Torre del Salvador, enriching his linguistic skills.
Why learning Spanish will be easier if you know the Spanish culture
Mastering Spanish isn’t just about learning the official language. It’s deeply rooted in understanding the Spanish culture. Knowing the culture helps Spanish learners and boosts their linguistic skills, making it easier to become bilingual.
People may have varied reasons to study Spanish abroad: exams, work, or even building relationships. The core objective remains the same—to communicate effectively.
Communication fails if you’re not understood. Culture is pivotal here. A rich vocabulary is crucial but not enough. To truly interact in the Spanish-speaking world, understanding cultural norms and shared meanings is vital.
By engaging in cultural activities or taking part in a Spanish immersion program, you get more than just language skills. You gain a holistic language learning experience that includes cultural immersion and better communication.
Why it’s beneficial to learn languages in later life
Learning a new language later in life is not only possible but also highly beneficial. Seniors can tap into various resources, such as online platforms and language learning programs, to develop new language skills.
These platforms offer interactive and fun ways to grasp grammar and vocabulary, making language acquisition more engaging.
For those looking to immerse themselves in a new language and culture, studying Spanish abroad is an excellent option.
You don’t only learn the official language but also get to engage in cultural activities, increasing your linguistic skills and understanding of the rich cultural heritage of the place.
Joe, who decided to study abroad in his golden years, opted for Spanish immersion programs. He went a step further by participating in an immersion program at a local family’s home, with a qualified Spanish teacher—what he calls the “icing on the cake.”
He explored various destinations, including Spain’s capital city, where he delved into the rich history and modern cities. This experience added to his academic excellence and contributed to his professional development.
He even took the time to explore the Mausoleum of the Lovers of Teruel in the Aragón region and indulge in the stunning Mudejar architecture.
So, no, it’s never too late. With abundant resources and opportunities for cultural exchange, seniors can find immense joy and cognitive stimulation in learning a new language like Spanish.
A truly unforgettable experience that Joe will never forget.
Joe’s time in Teruel, Spain, was a truly unforgettable experience. As someone who decided to study Spanish abroad, Teruel offered him not only linguistic skills but also an immersion into the rich cultural heritage of Spain. The city is famous for its Mudejar architecture, a UNESCO World Heritage site that fascinated Joe deeply.
He was particularly moved by the story of the Lovers of Teruel, Juan Diego de Marcilla and Isabel de Segura. Their tale from the 12th century still echoes in the town’s historical ambiance.
Joe’s Spanish skills were significantly enriched as he delved into the documented history of these young lovers. It was a perfect blend of language learning and cultural immersion.
This experience was a part of Joe’s broader Spanish study abroad program, which took him through several destinations in Spain.
As someone committed to learning Spanish abroad, Teruel was more than just a study tour. It was an unforgettable chapter in his life, an educational journey that he would carry in his heart forever.
Studying Spanish in Teruel provided Joe with an unparalleled cultural exchange. The heartbreaking yet beautiful tale of the Lovers of Teruel will forever be etched in his memory, enriching not only his understanding of the Spanish language but also offering him valuable life lessons.
Have you ever visited a Spanish city of Mudejar style whose main square is represented by the “Torico”?
The main festivities in Teruel happen in early July and last for one week. Known as La Vaquilla del Ángel, these festivities honour the city’s patron saint.
They also celebrate Teruel’s founding, linked to the Torico legend. Music parades, evening dances, fireworks, and bulls in the streets are key features. Cultural groups, called peñas, in the historic city centre organise activities.
They make sure both young and old are entertained. The “Puesta del pañuelico” at the Torico marks the festival start on Saturday. If you aim to learn Spanish abroad, this is a vibrant cultural immersion.
The program of festivities of La Vaquilla of Teruel
The La Vaquilla festival begins in Plaza Mayor El Torico. Here, roped bulls are the main attraction. On day one, a traditional act takes place.
A member from one of the 21 peñas climbs the Torico column. He places a red handkerchief on the sculpture “El Torico.” To do this, he needs help from his mates, forming a human castle. When he reaches “El Torico,” he kisses it, pats its back, and shows the handkerchief.
This sparks joy among the crowd. If you’re interested in studying Spanish abroad, experiencing this event will surely enrich your Spanish skills.
This act signifies the beginning of the Great Festival.
The act of placing the red handkerchief marks the launch of the Great Festival. During the festival, Teruel’s Peñas take charge and roam the historic centre.
These cultural groups keep their energy high with various activities. The festival wraps up when a selected Peña takes down the handkerchief. They hand it back to the city’s mayor or mayoress, signifying the end.
For those learning Spanish abroad, attending this event offers a rich cultural immersion.
Other events in the city of Teruel
Teruel isn’t just a hotspot during its main festival; it offers more throughout the year. “Las Bodas de Isabel de Segura” falls on the third Friday of February and transports the city back to the 13th century. It’s an engaging atmosphere, ideal for anyone engaged in Spanish study abroad programs.
Another event worth noting is “El Sermón de las Tortillas”, observed on Easter Tuesday. It’s a day for an outdoor meal in the city’s natural settings, enriching the local culture. This could be an appealing option for those in language learning programs seeking to deepen their understanding of Spanish traditions.
Why is Teruel a special city in its gastronomy?
Authentic Flavours
Teruel’s gastronomy thrives on a rich assortment of items, from meats and legumes to exquisite truffles. Special mention goes to the Protected Designation of Origin for Teruel ham and ternasco de Aragón beef, elevating the culinary experience for anyone seeking to learn Spanish abroad while immersed in a rich cultural heritage.
Traditional Dishes
Two standout dishes featuring Teruel ham are Delicias de Teruel and Regañaos. These aren’t just meals; they are cultural statements. In addition, the city offers other gastronomic delights like migas turolenses and gazpacho de pastor. If you’re part of a Spanish study abroad program, trying these dishes could be an invaluable cultural immersion.
A Taste of the Wild
Game meats like partridge, deer, and wild boar also find their place in Teruel’s menu. For Spanish learners interested in a unique experience, this offers a great way to get familiar with traditional culinary practices.
Liquid Complements
What better to pair your meal with than regional wines, particularly those with the Protected Geographical Indication of Lower Aragon? Also available are wines from Zaragoza, like those from Cariñena and Campo de Borja, enhancing your language learning programs with a taste of authenticity.
Sweet Endings
Finally, sweet treats such as Suspiros de Amante and handmade nougats round off the gastronomic journey. If you’re considering study tours in Spain for academic excellence, adding Teruel to your itinerary will give you a full cultural exchange experience.
Joe savoured his summer trip, which combined both Valencia and Teruel. Haven’t been to Spain yet? We invite you to join us next year for an enriching experience with host teachers and local guides.

The DELE assesses various language skills, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
On the other hand, SIELE is an internationally recognized certification for the Spanish language proficiency that is promoted by several prestigious institutions, including the Instituto Cervantes, the University of Salamanca, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and the University of Buenos Aires.
It also evaluates the four language skills, but it’s designed for a global audience, particularly for those seeking to study or work in various Spanish-speaking countries.
Both certifications have their own strengths and are recognized by educational institutions and employers around the world. It’s important to understand the specific requirements and objectives of each course to choose the most appropriate one based on your learning objectives and needs.
We are a SIELE-accredited exam centre and offer preparation courses for all the DELE exams.
