I’m Mónica Romero, founder of Spanish Express and a dedicated Spanish teacher. Over the years, I’ve helped countless individuals discover the power of language, and one thing is clear: learning Spanish isn’t just about words—it’s about transforming lives.
That’s exactly what brought Richard, a British athlete and two-time Duathlon World Champion, to our Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP) in Barcelona, Dosrius, in the Maresme Coast.
Richard is no stranger to pushing boundaries. Whether competing on the world stage or exploring new hiking trails, he thrives on challenges. But this time, his mission was different. He wanted to master Spanish for business professionals, opening doors to new career opportunities while deepening his connection to Spanish culture.
With a foot in both England and Spain, Richard understood that language is more than a skill—it’s the key to feeling truly at home. From expanding his professional network to forging personal connections, he was ready to embrace every aspect of life in Spain.
This program offered the perfect balance of language learning and cultural immersion, setting him up for success in both his personal and professional worlds.
Day 1: Richard’s First Taste of Spanish Culture
Enjoy Spanish Cuisine in a Family Setting
Richard’s journey into the Spanish-speaking world began with a warm Sunday lunch. My father, known for his exceptional cooking, prepared cazuela de arroz con marisco (seafood rice casserole).
We enjoyed it on the terrace, surrounded by nature. This informal setting helped Richard ease into conversations with my parents, all in Spanish.
It wasn’t just about savoring the food but about enhancing his listening comprehension and communicative skills. Engaging in real-life conversations with native Spanish speakers laid a strong foundation for his language journey.
Explore Spain’s Heritage at Canyamars
In the afternoon, we visited Canyamars to see the ancient Pozo de Hielo (ice well). This historical site offered a glimpse into how people in Spanish-speaking countries preserved ice during winter.
Walking through the serene landscape, we discussed its significance, blending cultural insights with language practice.
Richard not only learned technical vocabulary related to history but also strengthened his conversational skills in a professional environment.
Unwind with Local Cuisine at Ohana
We wrapped up the day with dinner at Ohana, a cozy spot run by a friend. Their menu featured gourmet burgers with a Spanish twist.
This relaxed dining experience allowed Richard to practice casual conversations, reinforcing his speaking and listening skills in a friendly setting.
It was a rewarding start, helping him build confidence in navigating the Spanish-speaking business world.
Day 2: Grammar, Culture, and Exploring Dosrius
Practice Grammar with Real-Life Application
Monday marked the start of Richard’s formal lessons in business Spanish.
We focused on present-tense verb conjugations, including verbs like estudiar (to study), beber (to drink), and subir (to go up). Richard had a solid foundation but needed targeted practice to fill gaps in his self-taught knowledge.
The lesson provided him with practical tools to use these verbs confidently in everyday conversations, essential for working professionals aiming to thrive in a competitive global market.
Strengthen Conversational Skills at Ca l’Andreu
After the lesson, we headed to Ca l’Andreu, a traditional bar in Dosrius, where Lydia, my teaching assistant, joined us.
This relaxed environment gave Richard a chance to practice language skills in a natural setting. He chatted with the bar staff and locals, discussing the food and culture.
These moments of informal interaction helped him feel more comfortable using Spanish, an important skill for students and professionals navigating international business or volunteer work in Spanish-speaking regions.
Discover Local Culture in Dosrius
In the afternoon, Lydia guided us through Dosrius. We visited landmarks like the town hall, the Church of Sant Iscle and Santa Victoria, and the Ernest Borràs Artistic Forest.
Richard described these sites in Spanish, applying his growing vocabulary while learning about the town’s history. Later, we reinforced his learning with a reading comprehension activity, using materials that detailed our visits.
This approach, combining real-life experiences with structured lessons, ensured Richard made meaningful progress in both comprehension and conversational Spanish—skills vital for career opportunities in Latin America and beyond.
Day 3: A Day of Language Practice and Coastal Exploration
Strengthen Language Proficiency with SIELE Practice
Tuesday’s focus was on preparing for Richard’s SIELE exam. The session assessed his reading comprehension and vocabulary, core elements of the course.
While Richard showcased a solid A1 proficiency, it became clear that advancing to A2 would require more work on complex grammar.
This session helped identify areas needing improvement, ensuring the program puts emphasis on building these skills for a successful outcome.
Explore Mataró Through Conversation
In the afternoon, we headed to the coastal city of Mataró. Walking along its bustling port, Richard engaged in casual conversations, describing the sights and interacting in Spanish. This practical use of language enriched his vocabulary and solidified his understanding.
At Nau Gaudí, Richard’s interest in Catalan architecture opened up discussions, which further enhanced his speaking and comprehension skills. These experiences aligned perfectly with the program’s goal of combining cultural insights with language learning.
Practice Spanish Over a Traditional Dinner
Dinner at a restaurant in Plaza Santa Anna introduced Richard to authentic Spanish tapas, including grilled prawns and Iberian ham croquettes. This meal was more than just about food; it was an opportunity to apply his growing vocabulary.
Discussing the dishes and sharing his thoughts on Spain pushed his language skills further, ensuring steady progress in both comprehension and conversational fluency.
Day 4: Refining Spanish Skills with Reflexive Verbs
Build Confidence with Reflexive Verbs
Wednesday’s focus was on reflexive verbs, an essential part of the Spanish language. We practiced verbs like despertarse (to wake up), lavarse (to wash), and acostarse (to go to bed), emphasizing their practical use in daily life.
These classes were designed to prepare Richard for real-world conversations, ensuring he could use reflexive expressions naturally. The session aimed to boost his confidence, an important step toward the successful completion of his language program.
Apply Grammar Through Interactive Exercises
In the afternoon, Richard worked with Laura, one of our teaching assistants, on the terrace. They practiced verbs such as gustar (to like) and reviewed vocabulary related to personal preferences and routines.
These exercises encouraged active participation and helped Richard apply grammar in conversational settings. By the end of the day, he had a clearer understanding of complex structures, which will benefit his career opportunities in fields like business management and customer relations.
Day 5: Cultural Immersion at Can Pedragosa
Learn Spanish Through Catalan Cuisine
Thursday offered a unique blend of language and culture at Can Pedragosa, a traditional farmhouse restaurant. The serene setting, surrounded by gardens and fields, showcased the region’s commitment to sustainable farming.
Richard explored Catalan cuisine while engaging in conversations about food and agricultural traditions—all in Spanish.
This immersive experience not only enriched his vocabulary but also gave him a deeper understanding of cultural practices, an important aspect for heritage speakers and those aiming to connect with Spanish-speaking communities.
Tackle Grammar with Interactive Exercises
In the afternoon, Lydia worked with Richard on mastering the distinction between ser and estar, two verbs that often confuse learners.
They also practiced using cardinal and ordinal numbers through interactive games. These sessions were part of the structured program, which consists of practical exercises to help students complete their learning journey with confidence.
By the end of the day, Richard’s pronunciation showed marked improvement, laying a solid foundation for his future career opportunities in Spanish-speaking environments.
Day 6: A Journey through Argentona’s Rich History
Discover Cultural Heritage at Argentona’s Landmarks
Friday’s visit to Argentona highlighted the town’s rich history and iconic sites. Laura led Richard on a tour of the Font Picant, a natural spring renowned for its medicinal waters, and the Museu del Càntir, which celebrates the history of water jugs.
These jugs hold cultural significance in the region, and Richard showed great interest, asking insightful questions in Spanish. This interactive experience deepened his understanding of local traditions while enhancing his language skills.
Strengthen Language Skills with Real-World Practice
The tour provided Richard with ample opportunities to use Spanish in real-world contexts, interacting with locals and engaging in conversations about the town’s history.
Later, at a charming café, he consolidated his learning by reviewing verbs and essential phrases. This session reinforced key grammar points, helping him progress steadily through the program.
By now, Richard was communicating with greater fluency and confidence, a crucial step toward achieving his career goals in Spanish-speaking environments.
Day 7: Farewell Breakfast and Final Reflections
Reflect on Language Growth
During our farewell breakfast, Richard shared how far he had come in just a week. He highlighted his improved ability to use Spanish confidently in conversations, especially in professional and social settings. This progress was a testament to his dedication and the structured nature of the program, which focuses on real-world application.
Strengthen Cultural Connections
Beyond grammar and vocabulary, Richard embraced the culture and lifestyle of the region. From exploring historic sites to enjoying local cuisine, every experience enriched his understanding of Spanish-speaking communities. These insights will serve him well in future jobs or careers requiring cultural awareness and adaptability.
Leave Prepared for Future Opportunities
