Founded by the Moors on the shores of the Guadiana River, Badajoz´s proximity to the border with Portugal has marked its character throughout history. A medieval cityscape that feels like stepping back in time. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. This city has the best preserved artistic and monumental heritage of Spain and the third best of the Old Continent, according to the Council of Europe. It was an important hub with stately character during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with the legacy of America’s wealth visible in many buildings. A walk through its streets leads to the admiration of squares, arches, towers, palaces, churches, and convents. Cáceres likewise stands out due to its cultural agenda, with initiatives such as the WOMAD Festival, the Classical Theatre Festival, and exhibitions at the Helga de Alvear Visual Arts Center. Finally, don´t miss the Holy Week, a Festival of International Touristic Interest.
In the midst of the steppe-like plains of Malpartida on the outskirts of Cáceres, the strange Los Barruecos landscape emerges where granite soils are able to store water from the light rainfall in spring and autumn in large reservoirs. It has an extraterrestrial feel, with large granite boulders of different shapes and sizes strewn around. Overtime, these rocks with their enchanting allure have been carved to be used to lay the departed to their eternal rest, painted during Neolithic times and more recently used for the epic battles in the most successful fantasy series of the decade: Game of Thrones. In there you can visit the VOSTELL Museum – the German Artist Wolf Vostell (1932-1998) is a fundamental figure of contemporary art from the second half of the 20th century. The museum is innovative and it is an expression of avant-garde art, a meeting place for art and life.
