Petra, a 65+-year-old German-American, joined our Spanish homestay immersion program (SHIP) in September, just in time to experience the Festes de la Mercè, a festival in honor of the city patron. The festival La Mercè, which is held in honor of the patron saint la Mercè (the Virgin of Mercy) on September 24 each year, is the “Fiesta Mayor” – the main festival – of Barcelona.
Petra loves Spanish literature and wants to improve her Spanish for her university studies and travel around Spain and Latin America.
She’s a retired veterinarian with a passion for reading Spanish books, studying grammar, hiking, skiing, and diving. Her love for adventure and learning brought her to Spanish Express, where she aimed to boost her language skills and enjoy the rich Spanish culture.
Unveiled the Heart of Barcelona
Our journey started in Barcelona’s lively city center, a top spot for foreign students. Petra and I explored Las Ramblas, where she practiced Spanish with street performers and vendors. At La Boquería market, Petra used her advanced Spanish to talk to different people within the market.
We visited Plaza Catalunya, Port Vell, and Barceloneta, immersing ourselves in the rich culture and history. Walking along Passeig de Gràcia, we admired Gaudí’s La Pedrera and Casa Batlló.
