If you’re eager to improve your Spanish skills while experiencing the vibrant culture of Spain, a homestay in Barcelona offers the perfect immersive learning solution.
Rather than relying on apps or quick fixes, engaging in a hands-on program allows you to truly connect with the language and its nuances. From holding meaningful conversations to navigating daily life with ease, immersion helps you build confidence and fluency.
In this article, I’ll take you through Christine’s enriching journey in Barcelona, where she mastered Spanish through cultural experiences, real-world practice, and memorable connections—all while exploring the heart of Catalonia!
A Mission to Refine Language and Explore Culture
After building a strong bond with Mónica during her first immersion, Christine couldn’t wait to come back to Spain.
Her goal this time was not only to sharpen her Spanish language skills but also to explore the hidden treasures of the Costa del Maresme region.
With half of her year spent in Florida, where Spanish is widely spoken, Christine was determined to deepen her understanding of the language.
As an avid traveler, she also wanted to enhance her ability to communicate with locals during her international trips with her husband.
Immersive Language Learning Through Cultural Excursions
Last year’s focus was on honing her conversational Spanish, especially for practical situations like dining, traveling, and navigating everyday life in Spain.
Christine had thrived in that immersive environment, and this time, she wanted to take her learning a step further.
With educational tourism at the heart of her program, her lessons were intertwined with cultural excursions, such as exploring famous destinations like Parc de la Ciutadella, Passeig de Gràcia, and Sagrada Família.
Staying close to these attractions offered easy access to Barcelona’s vibrant culture and modern amenities, making her language learning dynamic and engaging.
From Classroom to Cultural Exploration: Educational Tourism at Its Best
Instead of following a traditional classroom-based curriculum, we adopted a more holistic approach to Christine’s Spanish lessons this year.
Our philosophy was to merge language learning with exploration—what I like to call “educational tourism.”
This method allowed Christine to integrate her Spanish lessons into daily activities, providing her with opportunities to learn the language organically while immersing herself in the local culture.
Bringing Spanish to Life: Learning Beyond the Classroom
Throughout the program, we blended language learning with cultural excursions, ensuring that Christine practiced her Spanish in real-world contexts, whether it was exploring local towns accessible via public transport, engaging with locals near landmarks like Camp Nou or Urquinaona metro station, or discussing Spanish art and history.
Staying close to these attractions and within walking distance of key sites offered her a unique opportunity to discover Barcelona’s charm while focusing on her language goals. Additionally, home cooked meals and modern amenities in the house, as well as access to free Wi-Fi ensured a comfortable and productive learning experience.
Casa Coll i Regàs: A Modernist Masterpiece
One of the standout experiences during Christine’s stay was our visit to Casa Coll i Regàs, a stunning modernist house in Mataró, in the Maresme Coast, designed by the renowned architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. This architectural gem perfectly encapsulated the beauty of Catalan modernism.
As we toured the house, our guide, who had led us on previous visits, expertly tied together the historical and architectural significance of the building. The tour was much more than just a visit—it provided Christine with an opportunity to practice her descriptive language and vocabulary related to art, architecture, and history.
The beauty and complexity of Casa Coll i Regàs became a living classroom, offering Christine a unique way to deepen her knowledge of Spanish while staying in comfortable accommodation with modern amenities like free Wi-Fi.
A Family Affair: Deepening Bonds
What made this year’s visit even more special was the deepening bond that Christine formed with my family. Having built a strong relationship with my parents during her first immersion experience with her Spanish host family, Christine was excited to see them again. My parents were equally thrilled to reunite with her, and their shared connection added a personal dimension to her learning journey.
After our visit to Casa Coll i Regàs, we returned home, to what it’s popular called simply host family accommodation, for a special meal together. As usual, my dad prepared his famous seafood casserole, a dish that has become a family tradition.
Sharing this homemade meal together brought us even closer, with Christine experiencing not only the language and culture but also the warmth and hospitality of a traditional Spanish host family.
The day felt less like a formal language immersion and more like a reunion with old friends. This closeness enriched Christine’s understanding of Spanish culture beyond the language itself, fostering a sense of belonging and friendship that made her Barcelona homestay experience truly memorable.
Relaxation and Nature at Its Best
While our educational excursions were a key part of Christine’s immersion, we also made sure to balance the trip with moments of relaxation. One of our most cherished experiences was a leisurely Sunday spent at home.
We lounged in the lounge and on the patio, surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Dosrius, chatting about life, travel, and, of course, practicing Spanish in a relaxed setting. It was during these informal moments that Christine’s conversational skills really flourished.
Hike Through Tranquility and Build Spanish Skills
The following day, we embraced the natural beauty of the Costa del Maresme with a hike through the Parc del Montnegre i Corredor, the first urban park of silence in Spain. As we walked along the trails, Christine practiced her Spanish, describing the stunning scenery and learning new vocabulary related to nature and the environment.
The combination of outdoor adventure and language practice created the perfect environment for learning, far removed from the bustle of the city. With her homestay providing comfort and ease, she could focus on enjoying the region’s tranquility.
A Taste of Catalonia: Dining at a Traditional Masia
Savor Authentic Catalan Flavors
As part of Christine’s immersion into Spanish culture, we took a delightful trip to Restaurant Can Pedragosa, a traditional Catalan masia (farmhouse) that offers a true taste of local life.
This family-run restaurant has a rich history spanning over 50 years and is located in an idyllic location, just minutes away from iconic spots like Montseny and the Maresme coastal towns.
Can Pedragosa is known for its commitment to quality, fresh ingredients, and the personal touch they bring to every meal. Guests, both adults and children, find the site cozy and inviting, making it the best option for an authentic Catalan dining experience.
Dining Beyond Food: A Language and Cultural Lesson
The warm and inviting atmosphere at the masia made this dining experience unforgettable. We savored an array of traditional Catalan dishes, from roasted meats to fresh local vegetables, each one a reflection of the region’s rich culinary heritage.
Christine practiced ordering food in Spanish and engaging in conversation with the restaurant staff, turning the meal into a real-world language lesson. While enjoying the food, children played nearby, adding to the relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
The outing was more than just a meal—it was an authentic taste of the Catalan lifestyle, allowing Christine to connect with the culture and practise her Spanish skills.
A Team Effort: Meet Lydia and Laura, Our Teacher Assistants
This year, I was fortunate to have two outstanding teacher assistants working alongside me—Lydia and Laura. Both are local university students studying to become teachers, and their professionalism, enthusiasm, and thirst for knowledge have been truly inspiring.
Lydia, who is from Dosrius, and Laura, from Argentona (just a 20-minute drive away), brought fresh energy to our lessons, adding new perspectives that enriched Christine’s cultural immersion experience. Their involvement made the program feel as welcoming as a homestay, with common areas for collaboration and plenty of shared learning moments.
Their involvement was not only beneficial to me but also to Christine, as their youthful energy and creative approaches helped the immersion program even more engaging. Christine enjoyed the dynamic interactions with Lydia and Laura, who were eager to assist and offer insights during the lessons.
It was a privilege to mentor them as they develop their teaching skills, and they played an integral role in making this year’s program a success. The ability to practise Spanish in a lively and supportive environment made this experience feel even more rewarding for everyone involved.
Exploring Dosrius Through a New Lens: Educational Workbooks and Cultural Outings
One of the most exciting aspects of Christine’s return visit was the opportunity to explore Dosrius in a new way. Lydia and I had worked together to create an educational workbook that combined Spanish lessons with visits to some of the best places around Dosrius.
This approach allowed us to integrate language learning into our cultural excursions, giving Christine a fresh perspective on the town she had visited last year.
Discovering Dosrius with Lydia: A Journey Through History and Culture
Lydia took the lead in guiding Christine through Dosrius, showing her parts of the town from a different perspective. Our outing included visits to several important landmarks, each one contributing to Christine’s immersive learning experience.
- Ayuntamiento de Dosrius: The town hall, serving as the center of local governance, provided Christine with the chance to learn more about the administrative roles that govern the town while practicing her Spanish.
- Iglesia de Sant Iscle y Santa Victoria: This centuries-old church, dedicated to the patron saints of Dosrius, offered Christine an opportunity to learn about the town’s religious and cultural history while practicing descriptive language.
- Ayuntamiento Antiguo: The picturesque old town hall, a reminder of Dosrius’ past, allowed us to discuss historical changes and vocabulary related to local history.
- Lavadero “El Comú”: This traditional public washhouse, once a communal space for residents to wash their clothes and socialize, gave Christine a glimpse into the daily lives of past generations.
- Bosque Artístico de Ernest Borràs: A unique blend of nature and art, this forest is filled with sculptures by local artist Ernest Borràs. It provided a rich backdrop for language practice as we discussed the artwork and its cultural significance.
Each visit deepened Christine’s connection to the local culture and history, with Lydia guiding her through the town’s most iconic spots.
Dosrius became a living classroom, where language learning was seamlessly blended with history, art, and everyday life. With careful planning and attention to details, this experience was as enriching as any formal language program.
A Day in Argentona: History, Architecture, and Culture with Laura
Christine’s cultural and linguistic immersion continued with a memorable visit to Argentona, a town known for its rich history, modernist architecture, and unique traditions.
Accompanied by Laura, one of our teacher assistants from Argentona, Christine experienced the town’s highlights while practicing Spanish in a real-world setting.
- Font Picant y otras fuentes de Argentona: Argentona is famous for its natural springs, particularly Font Picant, whose mineral-rich waters have been valued for their medicinal properties. As we strolled through the area, Christine learned vocabulary related to health, nature, and local traditions.
- Casa Mora: This modernist building, with its intricate façade and vibrant tiles, provided an opportunity for Christine to learn about architectural styles and practice describing buildings in Spanish.
- Casa Josep Massip: Another architectural gem, this house allowed Christine to expand her vocabulary related to design and modernist movements.
- El Tranvía: The town’s now-defunct tram system offered insight into Argentona’s historical connectivity and urban growth, leading to conversations about transportation-related vocabulary.
- Museu del Càntir: Dedicated to the càntirs (ceramic water jugs), this museum provided Christine with a fascinating glimpse into the town’s craftsmanship traditions, allowing her to learn new vocabulary related to pottery and artisanal work.
The day concluded with a visit to Heladería La Granja, one of Argentona’s most beloved ice cream parlors, where Christine reflected on the day’s experiences over a sweet treat in a cozy setting, like a guest at home.
The carefully arranged itinerary ensured a blend of history, architecture, and culture, making it a perfect addition to her homestay experience.
Scaling History: A Visit to Castell de Burriac with Laura
Another highlight of Christine’s immersion was an excursion to Castell de Burriac, a medieval castle perched high on a hill overlooking the Maresme region.
The hike to the castle was both a physical challenge and an educational experience, offering Christine the opportunity to practice Spanish while navigating the scenic trails.
Laura, who served as an excellent guide, shared captivating stories about the castle’s strategic importance during medieval times, weaving history into Christine’s language lessons.
At the top, Christine was rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the coast and surrounding towns. The natural surroundings and historical context made this an engaging and immersive learning experience.
A Farewell in Barcelona: Sightseeing and Fond Memories
Christine’s final day of her Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP) was particularly special, as her husband, Pete, arrived in Barcelona El Prat Airport to pick her up and continue their travels around Spain together. To mark the occasion, we spent the day sightseeing in the heart of Barcelona.
We began at La Catedral, wandering through the stunning Gothic Quarter, where history and culture came alive. Christine practiced her Spanish as we strolled along the narrow streets, absorbing the beauty of one of Barcelona’s oldest neighborhoods. It was the perfect setting for real-world language practice and cultural exploration.
From there, we moved on to Plaça Reial, a vibrant square known for its palm trees and grand arches. The lively atmosphere set the stage for our next stop: lunch at one of Barcelona’s most iconic restaurants, where they offers free wi fi for guests. While enjoying the meal, Pete was excited to discuss his admiration for FC Barcelona, which made the experience even more memorable.
An Iconic Meal at Los Caracoles
One of the most memorable moments of the day was our lunch at Los Caracoles, a historic restaurant with over 180 years of culinary tradition. Nestled in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, this family-run restaurant has served countless locals and visitors with its exceptional Catalan cuisine.
Walking through the narrow streets to reach Los Caracoles was like stepping back in time. The restaurant’s rustic décor, complete with wood-fired ovens and walls adorned with photos of famous guests, transported us to another era.
Master Spanish While Savoring Catalonia’s Culinary Delights
Over a delicious meal featuring succulent roast meats and fresh seafood, Christine practiced her Spanish in a real-world setting, chatting with the friendly staff and ordering dishes confidently in the language she had spent so much time mastering.
It wasn’t just a meal—it was a cultural experience that tied together the flavors of Catalonia with the history of Barcelona. She even learned about the accommodation costs, which often varied per night, giving her insights for her future travels.
A Perfect Afternoon of Exploration
In the afternoon, we took a long walk from Las Ramblas to the Port of Barcelona, where we were fortunate enough to witness the excitement of the 37th America’s Cup.
The day ended with a stroll through the Arc de Triomf and a peaceful visit to Parc de la Ciutadella, where we reflected on Christine’s incredible journey.
Christine has become more than just a student—she has become a close friend. Her passion for Spanish, travel, and learning continues to inspire me, and I’m excited to stay connected with her as she continues her language journey.
