Spanish Fluency in Barcelona: A Week of Adventure, Culture, and Language Mastery
Destination: Castelldefels (Barcelona)
Teacher: Nanda de Miguel
Student: Cara
Nationality: American
Age: 34
Month: July
Objective: Improve for professional purposes
Hi, I’m Nanda, a native Spanish speaker and teacher. This week, I hosted Cara, an American student who was studying Spanish to improve her language skills for professional reasons.
She joined my Spanish course, which included a mix of general Spanish courses and practical experiences with native speakers. We focused on daily Spanish classes and conversations to strengthen her fluency.
Cara also visited local Spanish schools to see different learning environments. With our semi-intensive approach, she quickly became more confident and comfortable communicating with native Spanish speakers in real-life situations.
Excursion to Castelldefels Beach
One of the highlights of Cara’s week was our weekend trip to Castelldefels Beach, just outside Barcelona. After her Spanish courses in Barcelona, we took some time to relax by the sea.
Castelldefels offers the perfect escape from the vibrant and exciting city life. Cara enjoyed early morning swims, followed by a cortado with ice at a beach bar.
The beach provided the perfect setting for fun activities and practicing her Spanish in a more casual environment.
We even had dinner with friends at a local bar, just a short distance from the city center, making the experience even more special.
Strolling Through Castelldefels Town
After our time at the beach, we spent the afternoon strolling through Castelldefels Town, giving Cara a chance to experience the local culture.
As we wandered through the narrow streets, she practiced her Spanish in Barcelona by interacting with shopkeepers and locals. Castelldefels has a rich history that connects with Spanish culture, and we even visited the town’s historic castle.
Though it’s different from the bustling Gothic Quarter or the busy Plaza Catalunya, Castelldefels has its own charm, offering a quieter but equally enriching cultural experience for language learning.
Visit to El Garraf
We also took one of our weekend trips to El Garraf, a charming village nestled between the sea and mountains. For Cara, this was a relaxing break from the vibrant and exciting city of Barcelona.
El Garraf provided a unique opportunity for foreign students like Cara to engage with the local community and practice their Spanish with native speakers.
The picturesque streets and calm atmosphere were perfect for conversations and improving fluency in real-life situations.
Day Trip to Sitges
Our next adventure was a day trip to Sitges, a town known for its beauty and history. While Cara had been focusing on her Spanish school lessons, this trip offered a new way to immerse in the language.
We attended local cultural activities, which included exploring cultural events that highlighted the rich history of Sitges. Cara was particularly excited about the connection between Cuban architecture and Spanish culture.
These experiences, combined with her business Spanish classes, gave her a broader understanding of the language in both casual and professional settings. We even talked about future cooking classes she could attend in the area.
Pilates Class Experience
One morning, we took a break from the usual Spanish lessons for a fun and refreshing Pilates class. It was one of the fun activities that Cara hadn’t experienced before, and she enjoyed every moment.
This class was part of the specific training I offer to keep students mentally and physically active during their immersion.
With experienced teachers guiding us, Cara found the perfect balance between language learning and physical activity.
Paella Lunch at El Avión
One of the highlights of our week was enjoying a traditional paella lunch at El Avión. This experience allowed Cara to dive deeper into the local culture, as we savored local dishes like tallarinas and seafood paella.
The restaurant offered a perfect setting to talk about Spanish culture and practice more conversational Spanish. Even though the lunch was relaxed, Cara’s progress in her intensive course was evident.
Plus, El Avión provided free wifi, which allowed Cara to stay connected and share her experiences with friends back home.
Saturday Meal in Dosrius
Our Saturday started with a delightful gathering at Mónica’s house in Dosrius, where we met with fellow Spanish teachers and other students participating in the immersion program. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, with plenty of opportunities to practice Spanish in a natural and engaging setting.
Cara, along with the other students, exchanged stories and experiences with the teachers, discussing language learning and the local customs. The meal was filled with traditional Spanish dishes, known as tapas, creating the perfect environment to savor both the food and the language.
Cara had the chance to engage in meaningful conversations with the locals and immerse herself in the Spanish language, reinforcing her learning in an authentic context.
The interactions during this meal deepened her understanding of the culture and helped her improve her confidence in speaking Spanish.
Saturday Festival in Mataró
Later in the day, we headed to Mataró to experience the city’s famous festival, Les Santes, the largest cultural event in the area, celebrated every year from the 25th to the 29th of July. The festival is a vibrant display of Catalan traditions, including comedic performances, live music, and fireworks.
Cara was particularly fascinated by the gegants, towering figures parading through the streets, which are a central feature of many Catalan celebrations.
The festival also included a correfoc—a fire run where participants, dressed as devils, dance through fireworks in a dramatic and exciting spectacle. It was an extraordinary way for Cara to witness firsthand the liveliness and passion of Catalan culture.
The day was filled with unforgettable moments, and Cara left Mataró with a deeper appreciation for the region’s traditions and festivities.
