Pilar’s diary
Valencia, Spain
Our student, David Game, has surprised me the most out of all those who have participated in our Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP) to Valencia.
Besides wanting to speak Spanish with the locals, his attraction to visiting Valencia lay in the gastronomy and art of the town.
Undoubtedly, Valencia is the perfect place to enjoy social gatherings with the Spanish locals, taste delicious traditional cultural dishes, and be surprised by its architectural and urban art.
David chose one of the best dates to visit Valencia, the month of December, which specifically coincided with the Christmas holiday. It is an excellent date because the temperature in Valencia rests between 17 and 25 degrees.
One day of the SHIP program with David started like any other day…
Normally, we would get up early to have breakfast and start our Spanish classes. Then we would plan the day’s excursion.
During one day of his programme, we visited the old-world charm of Valencia and walked around the modern part of the city.
That day we invited Mónica, our chaperone and good conversationalist, on our city tour. Monica is the founder and director of Spanish Express and came down from Barcelona to Valencia to spend a couple of days with us. She couldn’t resist two of her weaknesses, seafood fideuá and a day full of art!
Together that day, we visited the City of Arts and Sciences, the Lonja, the Marqués de Dos Aguas Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.
After a couple of hours walking around the city, we decided to taste La Fideuá Valenciana in the centre of Valencia.
For David, our student, the Valencian gastronomy was a real delight. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone with so much joy towards each of the Valencian dishes that were placed in front of him: seafood paella, fideuá, esgarraet, olla valenciana, all i pebre, pumpkin fritters, chocolate with churros…
At night, taking advantage of the fact that we were in the old town, we went to the tavern Bulería for flamenco dancing, pure Spanish art.
I loved David’s personality. At his age, he showed us to be a person with a lot of energy that is eager to learn Spanish and, above all, eager to discover more about the world around him.
I can’t wait to continue to welcome new students and show them the hidden beauties of this amazing city. Hopefully, they will end up as in love with it as I am.
