Fallon, a university student from the US, set out on a remarkable Spanish immersion adventure. Her journey began with a week in Valencia with her first teacher, Pilar, and continued with three exciting weeks in Barcelona with me.
Along the way, she met Christine, a counselor from the US, and together they embraced the language and culture of Spain, making their immersion program unforgettable.
In Barcelona, Fallon didn’t just learn with me—she also gained insights from my teaching assistants, Laura and Lydia. Their presence added depth to her Spanish classes and cultural excursions, helping her speak Spanish confidently with native speakers.
From private lessons to outings around the city, Fallon’s experience in this immersion program opened doors to Spanish proficiency and enriched her journey through varied perspectives and styles.
Spanish Immersion in Barcelona: A Week of Adventure, Culture, and Language Mastery
Destination: Barcelona (Dosrius)
Teacher: Mónica
Student: Fallon
Nationality: US
Age: 22
Month: July
Objective: Improve Spanish Language
Great start: Tapas Lunch and Mataró’s Fiesta Mayor: Las Santas
Fallon’s Spanish immersion program began with a lively welcome over tapas at my house, where she met fellow students and teachers from the immersion course.
Eager to dive into the Spanish language, Fallon enjoyed chatting with native Spanish speakers over traditional tapas like jamón ibérico, patatas bravas, and pan con tomate. This warm introduction to Spanish culture set the tone for her language-learning journey.
Experiencing the Fiesta Mayor
Later, we attended Mataró’s Fiesta Mayor, Las Santas, a vibrant annual celebration. The streets came alive with colorful parades featuring the iconic gegants—towering figures that dance to traditional music. Fallon was captivated by the lively Spanish traditions and asked insightful questions to deepen her understanding.
As the evening continued, we experienced the thrilling correfocs, where performers dressed as devils ran through the streets with sparking fireworks. The night ended with a spectacular fireworks show, leaving Fallon inspired by the deep sense of community and culture woven into Spanish festivals.
Spanish Lessons: A Focus on Verb Conjugations and Vocabulary Building
From the start, Fallon’s dedication to learning Spanish in a meaningful way was clear. She didn’t just memorize grammar rules; she wanted to understand how Spanish worked in real-life conversations.
Verb conjugations, particularly the future tense, presented a challenge, but Fallon faced these hurdles with persistence.
Master Verb Conjugations in Spanish Immersion Programs
A significant part of our Spanish immersion courses focused on essential tenses—imperfect, pluperfect, future, and conditional—building Fallon’s Spanish skills step-by-step.
She practiced with tools like the Spanish for Holidays dossier and Verb workbook, which supported her journey as she worked to grasp each verb form and apply it during our outings.
These resources, common in many top Spanish immersion programs, made a big difference in her language acquisition, giving her the confidence to speak Spanish in everyday interactions.
Apply New Vocabulary in Real-Life Situations
One of the most rewarding parts of teaching Fallon was seeing her growing vocabulary come to life. From choosing dishes at local restaurants to asking for directions in Spanish, her ability to speak and understand the language advanced remarkably.
This progress showed her hard work and commitment to the learning process, turning each lesson into a step toward fluency. Fallon’s confidence grew with each conversation, making her immersion experience in Spain even more impactful.
Practical Lessons in Everyday Activities
One of the most enjoyable parts of Fallon’s Spanish immersion experience was bringing language lessons into our daily activities. Learning Spanish wasn’t limited to a classroom—it extended into every part of her time here. For example, we took a trip to Mataró Parc, a bustling shopping center, where we focused on learning vocabulary for various types of stores.
We visited shops specializing in food, clothing, and perfumes, and Fallon eagerly practiced her language skills by speaking Spanish with store staff, engaging in real-life conversations.
She enthusiastically asked about products and commented on items we saw, reinforcing her language acquisition in a meaningful way. These practical lessons added depth to her Spanish immersion program, making her Spanish studies abroad memorable and effective.
Build Confidence with Real-Life Spanish Practice
Another day, we visited a local tapas bar called Champanillo, in Premià de Mar, where Fallon learned to navigate a typical Spanish menu. This experience gave her an excellent opportunity to practice ordering food in Spanish, enhancing her familiarity with names of traditional tapas and teaching her phrases for speaking confidently with waitstaff.
Through these casual outings, Fallon’s speaking ability improved as she grew more comfortable expressing herself in Spanish. Her confidence expanded with each interaction, showcasing how immersive and practical lessons bring Spanish studies to life, a key strength of the best Spanish immersion programs.
Cultural Excursions: Discovering Dosrius
Our cultural excursion to Dosrius gave Fallon a unique opportunity to learn Spanish in a real-world setting while experiencing the town’s rich history.
Lydia, one of my teaching assistants and a native of Dosrius, acted as our guide, sharing her deep connection to the town through each story and landmark. With Lydia’s insights, Fallon engaged with the language and discovered Dosrius’s hidden gems, bringing her Spanish immersion to life.
Explore Dosrius’s Historical Landmarks
We started our tour at the old town council, where Lydia shared stories of the town’s governance through the years, followed by a visit to the historic local church.
Fallon practiced Spanish as she asked questions about each landmark, gaining real-life conversational skills with native speakers. These interactions brought her Spanish studies to life, adding depth to her language classes.
Experience Dosrius’ Old Laundry Site
One of the most captivating stops was the old laundry site, a place where townswomen once gathered to wash clothes. Fallon found the site fascinating, appreciating the strong sense of community it represented.
This glimpse into daily life in southern Spain connected her to the local culture and improved her communication skills in a natural, immersive setting.
Reflect on Art and Language in the Forest of Sculptures
The highlight of our Dosrius tour was a tranquil forest filled with sculptures, each representing unique sounds or concepts. The artistic nature of the forest sparked deep conversations, helping Fallon connect language learning with creativity.
These conversations enhanced her language acquisition, building her confidence and appreciation for Spain’s national language.
After the tour, we relaxed at a local café, where Fallon reviewed a dossier of questions about the sites we visited. Reflecting on Dosrius’ cultural significance, she showed a strong understanding of both the Spanish language and local history, enriching her immersion experience and strengthening her oral comprehension.
Cultural Excursions: Exploring Argentona
In addition to our time in Dosrius, we made an enriching trip to Argentona, another town with a deep cultural and historical legacy. Guided by my teaching assistant Laura, Fallon was excited to explore Argentona’s famous modernist architecture and artistic heritage.
Our first stop was Casa Puig i Cadafalch, an impressive building designed by the celebrated Catalan architect of the same name. Fallon admired the intricate façade, gaining insight into the modernist movement that shaped much of Catalonia’s design and culture.
Explore the Historic Church of Argentona
From Casa Puig i Cadafalch, we moved to Argentona’s historic church. This architectural gem holds deep cultural and religious meaning for the local community, and Laura provided an overview of its significance.
This visit offered Fallon a chance to practice Spanish, asking about the church’s role in local traditions, which added depth to her study abroad experience. Engaging with local students and speakers during these excursions allowed Fallon to see firsthand how language and culture intersect in everyday life.
Discover Argentona’s Water Jug Museum
One of the highlights of our visit to Argentona was the museum dedicated to water jugs—an iconic symbol of the town. The museum displayed an extensive collection of water jugs, each unique in design, material, and historical context.
Fallon enjoyed learning about the significance of these jugs in Catalan culture, connecting her studies to authentic local traditions and enhancing her communication skills with Laura’s support. This immersion helped reinforce her understanding of cultural nuances.
Reflect and Unwind with a Language Practice Session
After our cultural exploration, we stopped at a local ice cream parlor to relax and reflect on the day’s discoveries. Fallon completed a dossier I had prepared, this time focusing on Argentona’s rich history.
These excursions were more than just sightseeing—they were opportunities for Fallon to practice her Spanish speaking skills in a natural, relaxed setting.
With each conversation about art, architecture, and history, Fallon’s language skills grew, creating an authentic immersion experience that made her Spanish studies in Spain unforgettable.
Conversations by the Pool: Casual Learning Moments
Not all of Fallon’s learning took place in formal settings. Some of our most relaxed yet impactful learning moments happened by the pool in Dosrius. Fallon, Lydia, and I would sit together, casually chatting about a wide range of topics—from popular Spanish TV series to the latest movies.
These conversations were often spontaneous and fluid, allowing Fallon to practice her speaking skills in a comfortable, informal environment, much like private classes with native speakers.
During these poolside chats, I noticed her natural fluency starting to emerge. Fallon would ask questions, share her thoughts, and engage with us in Spanish, all while deepening her cultural understanding.
These moments gave her the chance to apply the grammar and vocabulary she had been learning in a way that felt both effortless and enjoyable.
Like students in study abroad programs or staying with host families, Fallon’s casual interactions helped her connect with the language on a personal level, making each lesson feel authentic and memorable.
Engaging Lessons with Interactive Learning
While traditional grammar exercises played a key role in Fallon’s progress, we also incorporated interactive activities to make learning more engaging. One of the methods we used was board games that helped reinforce verb conjugations and vocabulary in a playful way.
Fallon loved these games, and it was a joy to see how much fun she had while learning. The games added an element of competition and excitement to her lessons, making the process of learning new words and phrases both enjoyable and effective—a valuable approach for advanced students seeking well-rounded Spanish courses.
We also used role-playing exercises where Fallon would act out different scenarios, such as visiting a doctor or ordering at a restaurant.
These activities not only solidified her command of the language but also made her more comfortable with everyday Spanish interactions, much like students in immersion programs or those who stay with a host family.
By combining these interactive methods with traditional lessons, Fallon’s learning experience became more balanced, preparing her for various real-world situations where Spanish would be essential.
Culinary Adventures: Tasting Spain’s Flavors
Fallon’s immersion experience wouldn’t have been complete without sampling the rich flavors of Spanish cuisine. Our visit to Champanillo for tapas was just one of many opportunities for her to engage with Spain’s vibrant food culture.
She quickly picked up key phrases and learned to navigate a menu with ease. Whether grabbing ice cream after an excursion or dining at a traditional Spanish restaurant, each meal allowed Fallon to practice Spanish in real-world settings, further enhancing her language skills.
Savor Authentic Spanish Home-Cooked Meals
A special part of Fallon’s culinary adventure was the home-cooked meals prepared by my dad during her stay. Taking charge of most of the cooking, he delighted Fallon with traditional Spanish recipes and family favorites.
Each meal became a chance for Fallon to enjoy the local cuisine, and she expanded her vocabulary related to food and dining in a natural setting.
This unique experience added a personal touch to her immersion, similar to a homestay program where students stay with a local family, allowing her to communicate comfortably in everyday situations.
These culinary experiences helped Fallon improve her Spanish level, equipping her with the confidence to order meals, chat with servers, and ask for recommendations—all in Spanish.
By the end of her stay, she had gained an amazing experience that combined cultural activities with practical language application, making her learning journey as rewarding as it was immersive.
Festes de Gràcia with My Mum
One of the highlights of Fallon’s time in Barcelona was experiencing the vibrant Festes de Gràcia, a week-long neighborhood celebration renowned for its beautifully decorated streets. To make the event even more special, we were joined by my mother, who has a long history of attending this festival.
The streets of Gràcia were transformed into colorful displays, each with a unique theme created by the local community, reflecting a deep pride in their culture.
Fallon was captivated by the energy, creativity, and warmth that filled the streets, along with the lively music, dancing, and performances. Walking alongside my mother and me, Fallon learned about the festival’s history and the commitment of local businesses and residents to this annual transformation.
This experience provided her with a meaningful glimpse into the heart of Barcelona’s community spirit and the friendliness of the locals, making her study of Spanish culture both intimate and inspiring.
Exploring Casa Milà by Gaudí
One day, we visited one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks, Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera, designed by the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí. Fallon had already shown a deep appreciation for architecture, making this visit particularly exciting for her.
As we explored the building’s stunning, undulating façade and rooftop terraces, Fallon marveled at the unique shapes and organic forms that define Gaudí’s style.
We took our time on each level, from the attic with its exhibits on Gaudí’s architectural techniques to the preserved apartments that reflect early 20th-century life. Fallon was fascinated by Gaudí’s incorporation of natural forms into his designs, and she asked thoughtful questions about his inspirations and the influence he had on Barcelona’s architectural landscape.
This visit to Casa Milà provided a perfect mix of cultural exploration and language practice, as we discussed architecture in Spanish throughout our tour.
A Dive into History at the Catalonia History Museum
To further enrich her understanding of Catalonia’s culture and history, we visited the Catalonia History Museum, located in the old port. This museum offers a comprehensive journey through the region’s history, spanning from ancient times to present-day Catalonia.
Fallon found the exhibits on the Spanish Civil War and the rise of Catalan identity particularly fascinating, gaining deeper insight into the historical context behind the city’s cultural movements.
As we walked through the museum, our conversations touched on the events that have shaped Catalonia’s past, with Fallon displaying a strong interest in the region’s political and cultural dynamics.
This visit not only enhanced her appreciation for Catalonia’s history but also expanded her Spanish vocabulary related to history and politics—valuable for any student eager to study Spanish in depth.
A Surprise Flamenco Farewell
To celebrate Fallon’s final night in Barcelona, I surprised her with a flamenco show at one of the city’s intimate venues. Knowing her love for music and dance, I knew this would be the perfect end to her immersion experience.
The energy and passion of the flamenco dancers, paired with rhythmic guitar and soulful vocals, left Fallon captivated.
The performance was a vibrant display of Spanish culture, and Fallon was moved by the artistry and emotion behind each movement. After the show, we discussed the roots of flamenco in Spanish tradition, making the experience both entertaining and educational.
It was a memorable send-off, and Fallon felt deeply connected not only to the Spanish language but to the heart of Spanish culture as well.

Fallon’s time in Barcelona was much more than a language course; it was a journey of personal growth and cultural connection.
